The Ring

Engagement bands are symbols of the love, attention, and fidelity a pair shares. The shape and design of the ring nonetheless , has extra symbolism that many couples incorporate when they select the perfect ring to represent their relationship.

Symbolism of the engagement ring.

The first recorded diamond engagement ring was exchanged in 1477 when Archduke Maximillian presented the token to his pledged Mary of Burgandy. Before that event, engagement bands were either plain metal bands (iron for commoners, while metals like silver and gold were used among royalty) or used cheaper gems. Today, the most well liked choice for many couples are solitaires, but different gems are growing in popularity.

Initially, engagement bands may have represented some of a bride's dowry or bride price. Not only did the ring publicize the woman's committed standing, but the quality indicated the social position and prosperity of her groom.

It is assumed that the Romans started the practice of putting the engagement band on the left ring finger, which they believed contained the "vena amoris" or vein of love which supposedly connected to the heart. Other ancient cultures, including the Egyptians, also used such symbolism, and even today the convention continues both with engagement bands and marriage bands. In fact , wedding bands are placed first on the left ring finger to be nearest to the heart.

The Circle

Engagement rings are ultimately circles of metal, and the circle is part of very holy, symbolic geometry. Circles have no beginning and no end and so represent perpetuity, renewal, wholeness, and perfection. They also are symbolic of the sun, moon, and planets, combining all life just as an engagement band brings together the lives of 2 people.

The diamond in an engagement ring is another symbol of purity, endurance and longevity. A rare stone, diamonds come from the earth and literally take many billions of years to form. Calling a diamond valuable is a huge understatement. "Extraordinary" is a rather more sufficient term. A gem stone that can only be scratched by one of its own, the approval for diamonds in engagement rings can be connected to the association between the strength and sturdiness of a diamond and the same in a marriage

There are plenty of coloured gems that have historical associations to like. Red stones designate the heart, and therefore enthusiasm and a zest for life.
